Download our Custom Windlight Settings

While creating our Ghost Town build and Bed & Breakfast SIMs we have developed a handful of Windlight settings that offer a more immersive experience while visiting. Thanks to Torley Linden we discovered how to share those settings with you. (More of Torley's own magic here ...

•) Downloading Our Presets (•

Right click on each of the files below and save them to your own computer. We'll give you more help below for deciding where you need to store these in order for them to work in your Second Life client.

(We'll supply you with free hand lanterns for exploring on our night time settings, as they really are quite dark).

•) Installing Our Windlight Presets (•

First, quit the Second Life Viewer. Then:

  1. If you downloaded our .zip (Windows) or .tar (Mac) archives from above, find them on your computer and unzip them.
  2. Open the skies folder, and drag the .xml files (whether you downloaded them individually, or opened them from the zipped files) into the skies subdirectory within the right windlight folder, depending on your operating system

•) Finding the Windlight Folder On Your Computer (•

These are the usual install directories. Yours may look slightly different, but will be similar:

  • On Windows XP/NT it may be located here:
    • Skies - C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\SecondLife\user_settings\windlight\skies

  • On Windows Vista and 7 it may be located here:
    • Skies - C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\SecondLife\user_settings\windlight\skies

Tip: Everything, a lightweight search utility, makes it easy to find these directories. Search for "windlight".

  • On Mac it may be located here:

    • Skies - In the Finder, use Go menu > Go to Folder and paste in: ~/Library/Application Support/SecondLife/user_settings/windlight/skies

  • On Linux it may be located here:

The folder that contains the "secondlife" boot script (for example, "~/Desktop/SecondLife-i686-"). Its exact location depends on where you extracted the Viewer .bz2 archive after downloading it.

•) How to Use Our Windlight Presets (•

  1. Login to Second Life.
  2. Go to Me menu > Preferences.
  3. Click the Graphics tab.
  4. Set Quality and speed to High or Ultra.
    • If you click Advanced, you'll see that both High and Ultra have Atmospheric shaders checked, so you can fully see WindLight.
